The Rabbit: The most visible contemporary sign of sexuality

Artist’s Statement:

My intercultural Mediterranean/North American upbringing has allowed me to observe and participate in both oppressive and progressive mentalities on sexuality. Through my painting and performance practice, I create a stasis between the two polar states of denial and embrace. My practice predominantly employs visuals and situations that project a sense of hiding, yet, simultaneously, a whimsical provocation of eroticism.

The Rabbit: The most visible contemporary sign of sexuality is part of an ongoing exploration called The Boudoir. The Boudoir is a painting series of sex toys covered with a striped fabric. At first glance, the images are reminiscent of a decorative pattern, yet a change of perspective reveals objects that exemplify intimacy and sexual expression. The ambivalence created through the considerable scale and masking of that object questions our awareness of its meaning. Simultaneously, the revealing through the change of perspective promotes and celebrates the subtle intentions of sexual desire.
